Schools have closed and some businesses are advising employees to work from home to avoid transport disruptions ahead of an expected top of 38 degrees in Melbourne.
Students in the 31 Victorian local government areas facing extreme fire danger on Thursday have been temporarily relocated, including pupils from multiple schools in Melbourne’s north-east.
A total fire ban is in place for much of the state, including Melbourne and Geelong, following a warning from emergency services of an extreme fire danger across Victoria.
Emergency services urged residents of several small communities east of Ararat to prepare to evacuate just before midday on Thursday due to a bushfire at Warrak.
The CFA warned the fire was travelling from Bayindeen-Rocky Road in a south-easterly direction towards Eurambeen-Raglan Road.
