Why employees are faking work activity and what they are doing [Video]

More than a third of Irish employees admit to faking activity at work, most commonly in pursuit of a better work-life balance, a survey from workplace management software company Workhuman has found.

Some 36% of the 1,000 full-time employees in Ireland who answered the survey, conducted by Pollfish, said they fake activity, with 37% of them citing better work-life balance as a key motivation for their behaviour, and burnout (27%) and unrealistic expectations (25%) also given as reasons.

Of those pretending to be busy, 42% said they scrolled through social media and 41% said they handle personal errands during work hours.

The study also found a correlation between employee engagement and the likelihood of faking activity at work.

Specifically, 54% admitted that when they aren’t feeling engaged, they do the bare minimum to get through the day and 17% said they fake activity during periods of low engagement.
