Roanoke City Schools are back in session; Superintendent talks goals for new year [Video]

ROANOKE, Va. (WFXR) – It is the start of a brand new school year here in Roanoke City, so Superintendent Dr. Verletta White made her way around John P. Fishwick Middle School to wish the students the best of luck.

It’s a year of a lot of firsts for the district, Dr. White says she’s excited about a new curriculum, hoping it will let teachers have a better sense of a work-life balance.

“We’re getting more content in the hands of our teachers, especially more data at their fingertips as well so that as they’re planning, they can plan effectively using the tools that we are providing for them,” said Dr. White.

Educational experts say care in the classroom can improve academic performance

Dr. White says that Roanoke City has no teacher shortage, and it’s something they’re proud of, especially at John Fishwick, where the principal says there are only two new teachers this year.
