It was a quiet Sunday morning at Pearl Harbor in Hawaii when Japanese bombers staged a surprise attack on U.S. military and naval forces. The United States suffered 3,435 casualties and loss of or severe damage to 188 planes, eight battleships, three light cruisers, and four miscellaneous vessels.

According to the National Archives, on December 7, President Roosevelt was finishing lunch and getting ready to work on his stamp album in the White House when he received a call from Secretary of the Navy Frank Knox.
Secretary Knox delivered the news of the attack to the President.
