Governor checks in on damage in Southwest Virginia [Video]

ROANOKE, Va. (WFXR) — Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin took a trip through Southwest Virginia on Sunday to address several communities impacted by the damage caused by Hurricane Helene.

Hundreds have sustained damage to homes and businesses and there have been two confirmed fatalities.

The Governor stopped by Giles County to pass out lunches and encourage the community as it works to rebuild from the storms.

The county was hit hard by flooding from the New River, which has now crested and is beginning to recede.

“It’s pretty bad,” said Justin Spicer, owner of The Iron Skillet, a restaurant in Narrows, Virginia. “The worst I’ve seen here.”

His restaurant was flooded during the storm, and he has spent the past several days cleaning up the damage left behind.

The restaurant is about a quarter mile from the New River with a creek that runs directly behind.
