The load of office housework disproportionately falls on women at work. Are men maliciously asking us to take notes in meetings or get the team coffee? I don’t think so. But there is a lot of unconscious bias at play that makes them ask in the first place. Then so many of us do our best at these menial tasks to prove ourselves… and get stuck doing them forever. I do suggest a non-shamey non-blamey private conversation when this happens… but also if you suck at these tasks like Chad, they’ll stop asking.
PS: This is an excerpt from the talk I did at the Women in Tech Summit, and this was my response to a question I was asked on how to cope when you keep being asked to do the office housework.
