ExxonMobil, known for oil and gas, is in the legal crosshairs of California, facing a lawsuit filed by the state’s Attorney General against its side business, Advanced Recycling.
California AG Rob Bonta says the plastic recycling company is a sham, operating a decades-long “campaign of deception” regarding the amount of plastic waste the company produces and is capable of recycling causing irreversible environmental damage.
“The truth is, ExxonMobil’s Advanced Recycling can’t process large volumes of consumer plastic waste, things like chip bags. Its machinery can only process small amounts of clean, uniform plastic waste. But that hasn’t stopped the company from putting out social media posts that claim ‘we can give any plastic a new life,'” Bonta said.
The Advanced Recycling website describes its process as converting plastics into liquid and gas molecules that can be used to make what they call ‘valuable new products.’
