MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WSFA) -Elmore County Schools is one of four school districts in Alabama to receive the Healthy Meals Incentive Recognition award for the healthy meals it serves students.
Elmore County Schools has some unconventional ideas for getting students to eat healthy, like the Hot Spot food truck, which smokes USDA turkeys for school lunches.
This particular award recognized the system for its “scratch cooking,” making recipes and meals from scratch, and providing professional culinary training to its child nutrition team.
Elmore County also now incorporates Alabama-grown products in its school meals. That’s a new initiative in just the last five years.
